Dr. Zhisheng Yan won the Presidential Award for Faculty Excellence in Research in 2023.

Dr. Zhisheng Yan was selected as a recipient of the Presidential Award for Faculty Excellence in Research in 2023. He is the (only) recipient for faculty members who received their first full-time appointment less than six years ago.

Dr. Yan’s research aims to realize immersive multimedia systems such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in daily life – a vision to revolutionize personal computing by replacing smartphones with smart headwear. While immersive technologies have been traditionally studied by computer graphics researchers, the limited computing scale is preventing their wide adoption. Since his faculty career, Dr. Yan has initiated a new research program from a system perspective to enable immersive computing at scale. The fundamental gap he identifies is that today’s immersive computing is limited to single-device, short-term scenarios within a confined space, e.g., gaming in one’s bedroom, and must be extended to a ubiquitous, long-term, and collaborative computing environment. Launching this ambitious agenda on an emerging area has led to transformational effects in his research field. More about his research can be found at https://mason.gmu.edu/~zyan4/

This is the second Presidential Award won by CSIS faculties in the past 2 years. Dr. Kun Sun won the Presidential Award for Faculty Excellence in Research in 2022.
